Romantic Weekend Breaks in Paris

Love is a splendid thing and, for a romantic break to help cement a relationship, or create long-lasting memories, nothing compares to the iconic city of Paris.

There's never a bad time to visit 'The City of Love' but if you want to avoid the crowds and make the most of the clement weather, go in spring or autumn. The cafes, museums and bars never close, and there are even cheaper deals in mid-winter if you fancy a Christmas trip. You’ll pay peak prices in summer but, if you're a guy planning to propose, a beautiful summer evening in Paris is just about unbeatable. If your French isn’t great, it will pay to brush up before you go. The locals will appreciate your effort to speak in their language.

Romantic Dining

You're spoilt for choice in Paris, with a total of around 40,000 restaurants vying for your custom. Here's the top 100, according to a recent Time Out article, with suggestions from street food to Haute Cuisine.

You might want to take time out from your hotel room to see some sights! You could ride the funicular railway to the Montmartre district and have your lover’s portrait painted by a street artist; climb the Eiffel Tower or take a lazy, loving cruise on the Seine. Why not spend a few hours wandering the Louvre, including a visit to the unmissable Mona Lisa, followed by a picnic in the park? And don’t forget the Cathedral of Notre Dame and the “Rive Gauche”.

Shopping in Paris

Famous for its fashion, there’s no better time to spoil your partner than when you're in Paris. Shop for souvenirs of course, but don’t forget your other half will want to return home with more than a fridge magnet! With boutiques, arcades, concept shops and art galleries, you're truly spoilt for choice but, if all else fails, there are always the street markets.

Party-loving Paris lends itself to a big night out. Start out with some cocktails in the Place Vendome, then head for the tantalising Moulin Rouge in Pigalle. Finish off with an authentic Edith Piaf experience in Belleville or, if you're feeling particularly energetic, some pulsating clubbing in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district.

The historic bridges of Paris have, in recent years, become the scene of an unfortunate trend. Couples visit the many beautiful bridges across the Seine - particularly the Pont de l’Archevêché overlooking the Cathedral of Notre Dame - and attach padlocks inscribed with their initials to the bridge structure, as a symbol of their love. What started as a romantic novelty has become a serious concern for the authorities, who are now having to deal with the damage and defacement done to these beautiful bridges. The weight of the thousands of padlocks poses a serious structural threat to the bridges and there is now even an internet website campaigning against them.
